Many things can cause tiredness

Tiredness is our body’s way of telling us something: “Stop, I’m overworked and haven’t got enough energy. Give me a break so I can recharge my batteries.” A snooze or a lie-in will soon sort things out.

But if you are tired and can’t concentrate for a long period, your body is in imbalance. There are many potential reasons for this:poor diet, not taking in enough fluids, a nutrient-poor diet not containing enough vitamins and minerals, too little oxygen and exercise, stress, but also illnesses all weaken the body.

1. Tiredness due to disturbed sleep

Restorative sleep gives us energy for the whole day ahead. But if you are stressed and can't settle, you can’t even think about sleep.Your mind is buzzing, you are thinking about everything you have to do tomorrow. This isn’t good. Disturbed sleep robs you of a lot of energy. Anyone who finds it hard to get to sleep or stay asleep, can’t recharge their batteries for the following day.The consequences are: tiredness, a lack of drive and problems concentrating.

2. Tiredness due to a poor diet

We get tired when our body doesn't have enough energy and nutrients. Vitamins and minerals are the engines which drive us. The B vitaminsmagnesium and iron are particularly important. If we don’t have these building blocks, we are listless and are able to do less.We also often experience problems concentrating. But there is some good news:with the right diet, we can say goodbye to the dull tiredness caused by a lack of nutrients.

Ensure you have a balanced, healthy diet. Don't eat food that is too heavy or solid otherwise the body has to divert a lot of oxygen into the stomach, depriving the brain of it. The consequences are:you feel washed out. You also risk a decline in energy levels if you don't eat enough. Strict, imbalanced diets also make you tired. Always be sure to drink enough, ideally water and unsweetened tea. You should restrain from drinking too much coffee – especially in the afternoons and evenings – so you don't find it hard to get to sleep at night.

However, not everyone manages to get the nutrients they need from the food they eat alone. For example, this applies to people undertaking high levels of exercise, suffering from stress or illness or especially particular life events, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, puberty or menopause. To prevent the symptoms of a deficiency, it’s important to take sufficient vitamin B12, magnesium, folic acid and iron. This can be easily achieved by taking pure, high-concentration nutritional supplements.

3. Tiredness due to an unhealthy lifestyle

There are plenty of things you can do to make yourself more alert, fitter and stronger. Take adequate exercise. Walking, jogging or cycling give you a freshness boost. Not only because you gently crank up your metabolism for sustained periods. But fresh air is good for you too. If you spend a lot of time indoors: ventilate the rooms regularly so you can swap the drowsy carbon monoxide for invigorating oxygen.

Go outdoors as often as you can, get your fill of sunshine. It’s healthy and will lift your spirits. Especially in winter, when the body is on hold and production of the sleep hormone melatonin is running flat out, you need fresh air to interrupt your own little “hibernation”. Fresh air is also highly recommended to counter spring tiredness.Yes, this isn't made up: as it slowly gets warmer in spring, the blood vessels widen.Your blood pressure falls and you feel tired. Again, moderate exercise out of doors can really cheer you up.

I’m tired - when should I go to the doctor?

Are you getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and living healthily – but are still feeling deflated and tired? Then it might be a good idea to consult a doctor. Long-term tiredness can indicate illnesses, e.g. colds, blood diseases, cardiovascular problems, migraines, bowel illnesses and food intolerances. You mental health can also manifest stress through persistent tiredness and low spirits. Medication can also make you feel tired and light-headed, e.g. that taken for blood pressure, cough mixtures or pain relief.
